What is a Lisfranc Injury?
A Lisfranc injury occurs when there is damage to the Lisfranc joint complex, which is a collection of ligaments and bones in the midfoot that connect the metatarsal bones to the tarsal bones. These injuries can range from mild ligament sprains to severe fractures and dislocations.
Causes:
- Trauma: Direct trauma, such as a fall or a heavy object landing on the foot, can cause Lisfranc injuries.
- Sports Injuries: Athletes involved in sports that require sudden changes in direction or high-impact activities, such as football or soccer, are at increased risk of Lisfranc injuries.
- Accidents: Motor vehicle accidents and workplace injuries can also result in Lisfranc injuries due to the force exerted on the foot during impact.
Symptoms:
- Pain and swelling in the midfoot area
- Difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot
- Bruising on the top or bottom of the foot
- Instability or abnormal positioning of the foot
- Difficulty moving the toes
Treatment:
- Immobilization: Mild Lisfranc injuries may be treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with the use of a brace or cast to immobilize the foot.
- Rehabilitation: Physical therapy exercises may be prescribed to improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the foot and ankle.
- Surgery: Severe injuries, such as fractures or dislocations, may require surgical intervention to realign the bones and stabilize the joint complex.
