Georgia Podiatry is all for youth sports. When kids are out there surging around the soccer fields or hand-springing their way through gymnastics classes, their boundless energy is a source of parental pride and solid physical health. However, youth athletics also pose challenges for ever-growing bones and muscles, especially in the feet and ankles. And don’t even get us started on how easy it is to injure your tendons!

As young athletes chase their dreams, understanding common foot and ankle problems can help keep them on their feet and in the game. To help, we’ve decided to put together this blog post on 3 of the more widespread complications that kid competitors face. With this helpful info on hand, your kids will be better prepared to start athletic activities off on the right foot.

  1. Sever’s Syndrome:

Growing pains aren’t just a metaphor! This heel pain affects kids aged 8-14, as the heel bone grows faster than the surrounding muscles and tendons. Symptoms include a limp, tenderness, and swelling around the heel bone.

  1. Osgood-Schlatter Disease:

This condition typically affects 10-15 year-olds due to repetitive stress on the growth plate at the top of the shinbone. Look for swelling, tenderness, and a bump below the kneecap.

  1. Ankle Sprains:

Rolling an ankle is a rite of passage for many young athletes, and it can be caused by everything from overpronation to underperforming footwear. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking.

When it comes to recovery, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment are crucially important. Your pediatric DPM can recommend any of the following:

  • Rest and immobilization: Sometimes, all you need is time and a cool compress.
  • Physical therapy: Strengthening exercises and stretching can improve flexibility and prevent future injuries.
  • Orthotics: Customized shoe inserts can provide additional support and stability.
  • Pain management: Medication may sometimes be prescribed for severe pain or inflammation.

Don’t let athletic injuries sideline your child. If you’re wondering how to treat any of the problems listed above, our podiatrists are here to help!
