September is the start of back-to-school, the autumn season, and Falls Prevention Awareness Month. If you’re 65 or older, your risk of falling increases. As we age, our body’s ability to recover and bounce back after a serious injury decreases, making falls hazardous for our elders. How can you reduce your risks and avoid falling this year? Changing how we decorate and arrange our home can help keep you and your family safe. Consider some of our tips, then take a look around your house.
Clean Up the Clutter
Is there too much mess in your house? From bulky or sharp furniture to extra clutter on the floor. These additional items can increase the risk of a trip or fall. Take the time to move these items to another less-traveled part of the house or donate them. Creating a clear pathway is a win for everyone, especially for guests who may be unfamiliar with the layout of your home.
Brighten Things Up
Are you walking in the dark to the bathroom or kitchen? Nightlights can make a significant difference. We recommend brightening the hallway, bathroom, kitchen, and other common areas. Extra light can add comfort and confidence to your loved ones.
No More Rugs
They may be beautiful, but slippery rugs are a certain danger. Walking on a rug without a grip can lead to a painful injury. There are many risks of injury after a fall, from back injuries to head injuries. Find ways to ensure your rug won’t move or eliminate it.
