August may be a back-to-school month for most, but summer and the hot weather are still here. Exercising during the summer months may prove to be difficult. Some early mornings are cool and breezy, but in the blink of an eye, it can warm up and leave you drenched in sweat. On other days, staying inside in the cool AC is best. The weather can affect everything from your clothing choices to how you feel after a workout. Your body works harder to cool itself down, takes in more fluids, and consumes more energy during the summer.

Here are four things you should watch this August if you plan on exercising outdoors:

Temperature

When the temperature increases, your body must use more energy to cool you down. It will also cause you to use your fluid reserve more rapidly. In low temperatures, your body prefers to use fat as its energy source.

Humidity

When the air is saturated with moisture, it is not as easy for sweat to evaporate from your skin and cool you off. Dehydration can start rapidly in high humidity since your body must work harder to cool down.

Precipitation

Sometimes, light rain can cool you off on a warm day and make your workout more enjoyable. But if you are exposed to cold, soaking rain for a long period, this negatively affects your core body temperature.

Breeze

Wind helps wick sweat off your skin’s surface, enhancing the cooling effect. In addition, a steady tailwind can give you a nice boost in speed on your run!
